California has the coastal redwoods, the Eastern Sierra, and the Mojave National Preserve. It has the highest and lowest points in the lower 48 and more EV chargers than any other state. California is a wonderful place to overland in silence with an electric truck.
As for me, I’m just a silly goofy twit.
Why I put this up
People ask about the truck at club events and out on the trail, and I’m always happy to get into it. I’ve finally decided to document the build and gear as a reference for others (and a quick memory jog for me).
Most of what I’ve bought over the years didn’t stick. I went through six phone chargers before I settled on one, which is a lot of phone chargers. The Build page lists everything on the truck now. The Gear page covers what I’d actually recommend, why, and what I’d change.
I’m not going to tell you what to buy, since you know your setup better than I do.
Build
Everything currently on my Rivian R1T in Compass Yellow (BEST COLOR): rock sliders, bed rack, rooftop tent, gear tunnel slide, and the rest. It’s still a garage-able daily driver.
Gear
Overlanding gear is expensive, and it’s difficult to tell whether something is quality or just fancy marketing. From radios to cookware, this is the gear I’d actually recommend, and why.
Community
I love the solitude of a solo trip. But some things work best with a group: safely recovering a stuck vehicle, meeting people who are into the same silly things, and picking up more trash on the trail than any one of us could do alone.
