Built different.
Everything currently on my truck. The only way I’ve found to really dial in a setup is to go on as many trips as possible, and I learn something new on every one, so I’m constantly tweaking and trying new (or fewer!) things. I try to solve only the real problems I’ve run into, not imaginary problems I dream up while sitting in a boring meeting. The gear I’d actually recommend, and why, is on the Gear page.
-
Vehicle
- 2022 Rivian R1T, Gen 1 quad-motor, Compass Yellow. My daily driver and my only overland vehicle.
-
Wheels and tires
- Black Rhino Voltaic wheels, 20x8.5. Up to about 6 pounds lighter per wheel than the factory 20-inch All-Terrain Bright wheels, which offsets some of the heavier tires’ weight.
- Toyo Open Country A/T III EV, LT275/65R20, load range E. A more durable, heavier-duty all-terrain tire. I tore up the factory Pirelli Scorpions in 16,000 miles. That included off-roading, and they aren’t built for heavy off-roading.
-
Exterior and protection
- Megawatt Performance rock sliders with step. Protect the lower body on rocky trails, work as a step, and are strong enough to jack from.
- UV-blocking tint on the side windows.
-
Racks and mounting
- Prinsu Pro roof rack with panels. Flat, full-length roof platform with T-slot crossbars. It holds the Starlink, the awning, and the shower tent. It sits over the roof antenna and weakens the truck’s built-in LTE signal.
- Xtrusion Overland XTR1 bed rack, 14-inch. Holds the rooftop tent above the bed, high enough to clear the rear window, plus the MAXTRAX boards and shovel. It blocks the bed camera.
- BuiltRight bedside MOLLE panels. Mount points for securing cargo in the bed. They also hold the EcoFlow and the Auxbeam switch panel.
-
Sleep and shelter
- iKamper Skycamp DLX Mini. Hard-shell rooftop tent on the bed rack. Where I sleep on nearly every trip.
- Kammok Crosswing, 5-foot. Freestanding awning on the roof rack. It opens in about three seconds.
- Joolca ENSUITE Mounted Single. Shower tent mounted to the roof rack with L brackets.
-
Power
- EcoFlow Delta Pro. Portable power station mounted in the bed. At camp it runs the Starlink, the fridge, cooking equipment, and anything else I need, so the truck’s systems can sleep. I charge it from the truck’s outlet while the truck is charging.
- Auxbeam AR-800 switch panel. Runs off the EcoFlow and currently controls the Starlink.
-
Connectivity
- Starlink Mini. Mounted on the roof rack and powered by the EcoFlow. The truck joins its Wi-Fi when LTE is weak.
-
Cab
- Offroam R1 mounting bases (2). Machined-aluminum 20mm bases on each side of the center screen.
- Bulletpoint carbon-fiber arms. 20mm arms that hold the phone and other gear on the Offroam bases.
- Tackform MagSafe charger. Fan-cooled phone charger for navigation.
- VION roof sunshade. Two-piece magnetic shade for the glass roof.
- Electrified Overland Center Console MOLLE Cage and Upper MOLLE Panel. MOLLE mounting on the center console for an iPad mount and an extra radio mount.
-
Storage
- Electrified Overland gear tunnel slide. Drawer in the gear tunnel for smaller items, like mats, tent accessories, and saws. It opens from either side.
- RIGd UltraSwing. Hitch-mounted swing arm that carries the full-size spare where I can reach it. It keeps a recovery point.
- RIGd UltraTable. Table on the UltraSwing, next to the tailgate, for cooking.
-
Kitchen
- Dometic CFX3 35. Powered cooler, run off the EcoFlow.
-
Recovery
- Rivian Off-Road Recovery Kit (by Factor 55). A 30-foot tow strap, an 8-foot short strap, two soft shackles, a 3/4-inch bow shackle, a hitch link and pin, and recovery gloves.
- Factor 55 kinetic recovery rope.
- MAXTRAX Xtreme traction boards and MAXTRAX shovel. Mounted on the bed rack, with the shovel on top of the boards.
- ARB hydraulic recovery jack.
- GlueTread tire repair kit. For patching punctures on the trail.
- Full-size spare. Identical to the other four, so I can do five-tire rotations.
